Introduction

POETIC SCAPE is pleased to present “Ango,” a new exhibition by Sakiko Nomura. This exhibition follows the release of the photobook Sakiko Nomura: Ango, which juxtaposes Nomura’s photography with Ango Sakaguchi’s 1946 short story, The War and a Woman.

To coincide with the Japanese release of the book, the exhibition features multiple-exposure prints along with new works created specifically for POETIC SCAPE. Throughout the duration of the show, the gallery will operate with special evening hours from 16:00 to 22:00, allowing the dense, obsidian spaces of Nomura’s photography to merge with the atmosphere of Tokyo’s summer nights.

About the Publication: Sakiko Nomura: Ango
This book is the latest installment in an ongoing project by publisher and designer Satoshi Machiguchi, who facilitates a dialogue between contemporary Japanese photographers and classic Japanese literature within the curated space of a book. Following the first three collaborations with Daido Moriyama, Machiguchi selected Sakiko Nomura for this fourth volume.

Ango Sakaguchi’s The War and a Woman was originally published in 1946, though it was heavily censored by the GHQ (General Headquarters) during the post-war occupation. The publication Sakiko Nomura: Ango features the complete, uncensored version of the story (first released in 2000) alongside Nomura’s haunting imagery. Following the German release in June 2017 and the English edition in July, the Japanese edition will be officially released on August 15.
