Just before beginning my stay at the Haruna Lake residency, my mother suddenly passed away.
I thought that rather than living as usual and being reminded of her in countless small moments, changing my environment might help me deceive my own heart. Without accepting my mother’s death, I began my stay.
Lake Haruna lay before me, its quiet landscape veiled in mist.
There are legends of Princess Kibe and Lady Shibukawa drowning themselves in Lake Haruna, transforming into great serpents and dragons.
I wanted to see something like the threshold between life and death within the lake, so I took photos of the lake with underwater camera.
Through developing negatives, printing in the darkroom, and taking time to face the images, I rendered the inside of the lake three-dimensionally in grains of film.
Photography captures unseen presences, and in doing so, makes my mother’s absence real.
Time simply passes, and memories of my mother become more vivid.
Amid the mist of Lake Haruna, I spent my days facing her absence as I gazed across the water.
