Introduction

POETIC SCAPE is pleased to present “EACH LITTLE THING,” the third solo exhibition at the gallery by photographer Seiji Kumagai.

Following the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, Kumagai launched two distinct photographic projects. The first, Spring, 2011, captured the complex atmosphere of Tokyo just one month after the disaster and served as the inaugural exhibition for POETIC SCAPE.

The second project, “EACH LITTLE THING,” offers a different approach. While Spring, 2011 was deeply connected to the artist’s immediate physical and emotional presence, this series utilizes a more detached, systematic production method. All photographs were shot in a vertical orientation, and Kumagai entrusted a collection of hundreds of images to designer Kensuke Takahashi to handle the selection and editing of the photobooks. Though this process minimizes the photographer’s direct interference, the core of the work remains Kumagai’s personal inquiry: “What is my desire?”—a question he has pursued relentlessly since 3.11.

The “EACH LITTLE THING” project was originally conceived as a series of ten photobooks under the same title. Following the release of issues #01 through #06 in 2015, issues #07 and #08 are being published in the first half of 2017 to coincide with this exhibition. This show will feature a composition of these new works alongside past entries from the series. With the final two volumes (#09 and #10) scheduled for release by 2018, POETIC SCAPE will eventually host a concluding exhibition to mark the culmination of this seven-year project.
